ONE WORLD ONE SUN ONE GRID (OWOSOG)

One World One Sun One Grid (OWOSOG) is an initiative that was ideated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2018. Its foundation was led in 2015 at the 21st Conference of Parties meeting in Paris, France. The establishment of International Solar Alliance(ISA) which is presently joined by 121 member countries set off to be the second-largest global institution after the United Nations with the agreement of its headquarter to be in Gurugram (India) was also concluded in the meeting.

The ambition of OWOSOG is to connect the globe with one grid system of electricity produced from renewable energy resources. This is to be carried under the vision of “The Sun Never Sets” because the sun radiates energy continuously on earth’s surface. It may be half part of the earth remains in the dark side and other in light but sunlight is always there alternatively. The grid system intrinsically is the interconnected network lines that can help to manage the efficient use of energy, for example, if it is a day in the northern part than energy can be stored here and be shared to light up in the southern part where there are night and vice versa. India has initiated its plan to implement it in three phases, first is to connect Middle-East-South-Asia-South-East-Asia (MESASEA). The second one is to interconnect to Africa and the third global interconnection.

To manage the funds for its infrastructure and development India has also suggested the establishment of World Solar Bank which will be headquartered in India and will account for 10 Billion-dollar funds to provide loans to the least developed countries. This is the first time India is supporting and suggesting something on such a global scale and it will have a paradigmatic change in economic activity and contribution to global economic growth. It will also help India to tackle the “One Road One Belt” initiative of China and help to emerge as a global power.
